The Society’s March lecture is given by Mary Sharp and has a short title: “The Manufactured Woman: The story of Pandora and how she inspired writers and artists to imagine how and why women came into the world.” In Greek legend, Pandora was created expressly to cause trouble to men which, by opening her box, she achieved.
An experienced lecturer, broadcaster and teacher, Mary looks at the original sources for the story and draws parallels with Eve in Genesis, Galatea in Ovid and more recently, for example, Coppelia, My Fair Lady, The Winter’s Tale and Educating Rita. This event takes place in Stourbridge Town Hall on Thursday 7 March at 10.55 am. It is only open to members and guests of The Arts Society If you are interested in finding out more about joining us or simply coming to this lecture please contact Neill Robb either on 07484 830487 or email neillrobb@btinternet.com as soon as possible.
The Arts Society Stourbridge was founded almost a quarter of a century ago. We are a member Society of The Arts Society - a leading arts education charity with a global network of over 380 local Societies, which bring people together through a shared curiosity for the arts.
Our objective, through inspiring lectures, visits, study days and heritage projects, is to broaden our knowledge and enjoyment of the arts, with like-minded, friendly people.
We meet on a Thursday once a month (except July, August and December), at Stourbridge Town Hall. Our meetings begin at 10.50 am and prospective members are welcome as guests,
Our speakers are chosen for their specialist knowledge, presentational skills and entertainment value. They speak on a wide variety of topics: architecture, painting, music, glass, film, furniture, jewellery - and much, much more, from classical and ancient to modern and contemporary.
Membership gives access to our Special Interest Days, where a topic is explored in more detail, and to our programme of visits to galleries, museums, exhibitions, the theatre, country houses, gardens . . . and, each year, an arts-related tour abroad.
